When I first started shooting boudoir, I knew 2 things: I LOVED it, and guys want to see something a little “more”, if you know what I mean.
So I shot things a little on the sexier side. Well, let’s say a LOT. And the men were pleased. Very pleased. Yay men. Woo hoo.
That was my first mistake. I have been shooting boudoir photography for over 6 years now and I have learned a LOT. The most important thing I have learned is that it is not really for “him”, it is for her. Okay… so maybe the photos are for him, just a little. But the whole experience; the hair, the makeup, the shopping for lingerie, the music, the champagne, the feeling that she is sexy and beautiful. That is for her. She wants to feel beautiful, and I honestly think that the reason some of my client’s husbands/boyfriends are so emotionally touched by the gift, is because they know that, even if for just a day or when she looks at these pictures, she feels as sexy as he sees her every day.
I am not sure if I am making sense. I guess what I am trying to say is that modern boudoir photography is about your incredible beauty, and I intend to show that part of you.
And although I know that my first few clients loved their photographs, there was something different about them. They were all about sex and not focused on her unique beauty. And there is a very big difference.
All that being said. Meet Lindsay. My very first client. Now… I am not going to share her first shoot with you, simply because it is “private”, and this shot is not even from her boudoir shoot – it is from a couple’s shoot I did last year for her… but I feel like it shows a very intimate, sexy side of her without showing much of anything. Sexy does not have to be about sex.
I don’t know. Maybe I just really love her legs.
(What’s the tip here? Remember this is about you and your goegeousness… (is that a word??) Celebrate it.

One of my favorite things to see when I am going through my monstrous email inbox…
“I just wanted to let you know I gave the pictures to him last night and he absolutely LOVED them, and was so shocked. It was so cute to see the look on his face as he flipped through the book, seeing me like that :). Thank you SO much for such an amazing experience and gift to give him! I couldn’t have asked for a better photographer!”
It’s why I do what I do. <3
(just a note: this photograph is not of the person who sent me the above email. It is of my dear friend B. Isn’t she lovely?)

What kind of shoes should you bring to your boudoir photography session??
I prefer to keep it simple. Bring a pair of sexy black stilettos and a pair of fun/stylish shoes. Heels play 2 very important parts in a shoot. They give you a little lift and can make you feel incredibly sexy, whether they are in the shot or not. And then of course the obvious, they look HOT! I am most certainly not a “high heel” wearing girl, but when I do force myself to put on a pair, I feel like an instant bombshell. It just gives you that extra oomph. Don’t worry if they are too high or uncomfortable, you won’t be doing much walking, I promise!

LOVE these shoes. (Found them somewhere out there on the web.)

This week I thought I would list the Top 10 tips for your boudoir shoot. (I may elaborate on them later, but for now, I just wanted to get them out there.)
TOP 10 BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTOSHOOT TIPS
- Moisturize your skin. To get that soft, supple, natural glow.
- Get a manicure and pedicure. Your toes need to look pretty too!!
- Don’t wear any elastic or tight clothing the day of your shoot. That means no elastic bra straps, no tight jeans, no strappy sandals!!
- Hydrate, Hydrate, HYDRATE!! Load up on fluids (H2O!) the week of your shoot.
- Don’t tan, for god’s sake don’t tan!!! This means tanning beds, sunbathing, or self tanners!! You might not think your skin looks “orange” in the mirror, but the camera disagrees.
- RELAX and have fun! If you are so inclined, order a glass of wine or champagne, on me. If it’s early, make it a mimosa :)
- Bring a friend! If you think it will help! I am more than happy to invite one of your girlfriends to the shoot. Sometimes it helps take the edge off. (Sorry, no men allowed!)
- Wear false eyelashes. We have already talked about this HERE, but I can’t stress it enough.
- Treat yourself to some pretty lingerie.
- Be sure that you LOVE your photographer’s style, personality and portfolio. This is ever so important, absolutely must feel comfortable and trust your photographer.)
Do you have tips or ideas from your boudoir shoot? Leave a comment!! Maybe it is something you wish you would or wouldn’t have done? I would love to hear your ideas! (plus, it would be nice to hear from my readers… I know you’re out there!!
